Worth a Look: “To Hell and Back”, photos by a Chilean Miner
Oct 26, 2010 by Matt Lutton 2 Comments »Panos Pictures is exclusively distributing a photo series by Edison Peña, one of the 33 miners trapped in a Chilean mine for 69 days. Writer Dan McDougall and photographer Adam Patterson were documenting the lives of Pena’s family on the surface in the weeks before the rescue and struck a friendship with Peña through a series of letters delivered underground. The team contributed a pair of running shoes and a camera to Peña and he brought back some amazing pictures about his life in the mine. View the entire series of 64 images which include pictures of his rescue and return to normal life. The accompanying text also illuminates his personal struggles and strength of will. This is a remarkable story by someone who actually experienced this horrible purgatory, I think it brings us a little closer to seeing what it was like.
