Congrats to Eric Kayne

Friend of dva Eric Kayne, subject of our second interview, was honored with the first-place award in the Best of Photojournalism 2009 contest for the General News category with a terrific picture from a soldier’s funeral in Texas.
The casket of Cpl. Joshua Alexander Molina, 20, is transferred from St. Matthews Episcopal Church to Houston National Cemetery. Molina, 20, whose funeral took place on what would have been his 21st birthday, died March 27 in Baghdad of wounds suffered when an improvised bomb exploded near his vehicle.
The image was previously featured in our interview, and is one of my favorite pictures from Kayne and from the last year. Congratulations to him (and the other winners, which are still being announced). Unfortunately, this news came on the same day as some other big events in Kayne’s life and we wish him the best. Cannot wait to see what is next out of his cameras.

(h/t to The Click, who said it best, “Great to see this amazing shot get a first place. Only an award of excellence from POYi? Come on!”)
